TITLE: INTO THE GREY AUTHOR: Rowan Darkstar EMAIL: rowan_d1@yahoo.com RATING: All Ages CATEGORIES: Angst, hints of Sam/Jack, Jonas POV ARCHIVE: Yes, just let me know. Written for the GateShip Wendesday Shorts "Nightwalkers" Challenge. 458 words. I tried.:) "Into the Grey" by Rowan Darkstar (rowan_d1@yahoo.com) He knows it is cliché to fall for the gorgeous blonde amid the brown and grey of this underground life. He has never been one to follow the trodden path. Pushing the boundaries of knowledge, questioning what is blindly accepted, this is his way. Jonas loves sun. Even the grey clouds of Oregon taste of freedom after his confinement. He chose his career for the thrill of dirt between his fingers, the visceral truth in discovering the concrete ties between the present and the past. He hasn't fallen for her. But being in her presence quickens his pulse. They stop at a roadside diner on their way from the airfield to the town. She has been quiet on the drive, sunglasses hiding her blue eyes beneath the clouds. The order she throws at the waitress is nothing more than toast and coffee. While the others order, MAJ Carter pulls out her cell phone. Teal'c tosses a sidewise glance toward his friend as she speaks into her phone, but he continues answering Jonas's questions about the menu. When MAJ Carter hangs up, Teal'c asks quietly, "Any news of O'Neill?" She shakes her head and drops the phone in her overcoat pocket. "No. No more incoming messages from the Tok'ra." Jonas looks between these two; the woman in the black coat and the alien who served the Goa'uld. MAJ Carter says softly, "Excuse me," and moves off to find the ladies room. She returns ten minutes later, and the sunglasses are back on. Their orders are on the table and she silently nibbles her toast and sips her coffee while Jonas and Teal'c down eggs and sausage and bacon. Jonas feels her beside him, knows she is a million miles away. He knows where she is. And it tells him more about his place on this team than words ever could. He told her he was a good judge of people. He doesn't doubt his instincts now. Jonas and Teal'c follow her out of the diner, and Jonas watches as she takes her place behind the wheel. He remembers the woman he met; Dr. Jackson behind her and Colonel O'Neill beside. He looks for that woman now. But the glasses hide too much, and the hard jaw line blocks out the rest. He hopes someday...he'll be allowed to know her. He hopes someday she'll make it home. His eyes have lingered upon her, and she glances his way. Her lips curl into a kind smile, and he returns the gesture as always. She turns back to the road. He watches her gloved fingers on the wheel as she steers them toward their destination. He hears Teal'c breathing deeply in the back of the car. Her eyes are on the horizon. ***** rowan_d1@yahoo.com
