And the beat goes on...
Water's Edge - the Music:
These are songs that got heavy play over the years while I was writing (listed in no particular order). Some of them have gotten tied into specific scenes or passages in my mind, and those are notated where I can remember them. I know I've forgotten many of those used in the first years or so of writing, so naturally more of the later songs are represented here.
Mind you, I do not claim that you will find any of these songs suitable to the piece. This is an amalgamation of my personal taste in music and what inspires my muse along with those songs I do feel would truly be appropriate as a soundtrack. Proceed at your own risk.:)
- "Aurora" - Foo Fighters
- "Learn to Fly" - Foo Fighters
- "Falling For the First Time" - Barenaked Ladies
- "Pinch Me" - Barenaked Ladies
- "If I Remember You Right/I Had a King" - Betty Buckley
- "Hanging by a Moment" - Lifehouse
- "Everything" - Lifehouse
- "Ordinary" - Greg Jones
(this goes with the opening scene of 12b when Scully is first visiting the campus on which Daniel teaches and finding his building and stepping back into a life she once loved and nearly stayed in)
Some instrumental soundtrack from "The Virgin Suicides" (particularly for
the opening chapters of Book II)
"Beautiful Day" - U2 (You'll never hear it right again after this, but this
one, for me, is inexorably the stairwell scene when Scully first registers
Mulder's death at the Lone Gunmen's. Yes, I've now given the song an
awful "bittersweet" tang, and I dare you to hear it right again.:D)
"I'm all right (help me)" - Michael Brandmeier
"A Different Drum" - Peter Gabriel (this is the first "date night" with Daniel. The walk
to the park after and particularly the moments on the bridge leading up to and including
the first kiss).
"I Can't Take My Eyes Off You" - Melanie Doane
"Glycerine" - BUSH
The "Playing by Heart" soundtrack - the instrumental/jazz one
"Hands Clean" - Alanis Morissette
"Precious Illusions" - Alanis Morissette (this one, more than being tied to one
scene, is significant to the general 'process' of stepping into a relationship with Daniel. And then, again,
as the new incarnation of her relationship with Mulder develops. "but this won't work now the way it
once did, and I won't keep it up even though I would love to, once I know who I'm not then I'll know who
I am", "but this won't work as well as the way it once did, cuz I want to decide between survival and bliss"
"So Unsexy" - Alanis Morrisette (a hodgepodge of Mulder moments over the years for
Scully-"somewhere along the way I think I gave you the power to make me feel the way I thought only my
father could", "oh, these little defenses, how they fail to comfort me, your hand pulling away and I'm devastated")
"Juliette" - Vanessa Daou
"You're a God" - Vertical Horizon
"a sorta fairytale" - Tori Amos (this is the charity ball with Daniel, the kiss by the fountain
in the lobby and the drive back to his apartment)
"Taxi Ride" - Tori Amos (also the ride back to Daniel's apartment after the ball. This
whole sequence of the story is referred to in my notes/mind as 'The Enchanted Evening'. Hopelessly
corny, I know, but what can I say, I got caught up.:))
"Pancake" - Tori Amos (this is the first time Daniel and Scully make love)
"another girl's paradise" - Tori Amos
"Virginia" - Tori Amos
"Crazy" - Tori Amos
"Whatever, Wherever" - Shakira (this goes with the laughing-over-the-cobbler-and-wrestling-and-finally-kissing
scene in Daniel's kitchen)
"Until She Comes" - Psychedelic Furs
"Two Wrongs and a Right" - The Normals
"Sweet Misery" - Michelle Branch
"Complicated" - Avril Lavigne
"Sk8tr Boi" - Avril Lavigne
"Elevation" - U2
"Beautiful" - Josh Zandman (this was used during the conception of the
Mulder/Scully scene where she is first given the injection and he is holding her afterward and
thus became the unofficial "Mulder/Scully Love Theme".:) Also applies to the scene in which
Scully dreams of her time with Mulder and wakes up beside Daniel.)
"I Drove All Night" - Celine Dion
"Cover Me" - Josh Zandman
"Here is Gone" - GooGoo Dolls
"Sympathy" - GooGoo Dolls
"Gravity of Love" - Enigma (this song is tricky--I generally make it a rule never to play this while I'm writing, because you see it's SO good and SO powerful, that I tend to be fooled into thinking that whatever I'm writing is profound and earth-shaking. Only to find out that when the music is NOT playing, I have written a bunch of drivel. However, I made an exception for one crucial scene in WE (though I read it thoroughly withOUT the music, just to be sure...). This song is the score to the final scene in Book II, when Scully finally admits to herself that she loved Mulder, and simultaneously takes a step toward giving her heart and intimate posessions to someone else, stepping with both feet into a new life and letting go. At the extreme risk of immodesty, the line *Mulder, did you know I loved you?* actually still gives me goosebumps. I hope it's more than the lingering effects of the song.;))
"How You Remind Me" - Nickelback ("Not like you to say sorry, I was waitin'
on a different story"--That line was tied from very early on to a general feel of some of the scenes
in Book III soon after Mulder reveals where he has been.)
"Tell Her This" - Del Amitri
"Believe" - K's Choice
"If You're Not Scared" - K's Choice
"Virgin State of Mind" - K's Choice
"Fallin' At Your Feet" - U2
"Another Perfect Day" - American Hi-Fi
"Chemistry" - Semisonic
"Long Goodbye" - Josh Zandman
"Cactus Tree" - Joni Mitchell
"Clocks" - Coldplay (This is chapter 20. The first time M&S go out to dinner. The
music in the car on the radio. The music for the first kiss. This will always and forever be this scene
for me (which, incidently, is my favorite in the book:))
"God in my Bed" - K's Choice (in Scully's bedroom at 2am after nursing Christopher back to sleep)
"Butterflies Instead" - K's Choice
"20,000 Seconds" - K's Choice
"Now is Mine" - K's Choice
"Charm Attack" - Leona Naess
"I Tried To Rock You But You Only Roll" - Leona Naess
"Talula (BT's Tornado mix)" - Tori Amos
"The Scientist" - Coldplay (the lyrics to this describe Book III in general so closely it's freakin' spooky:))
"Say You Will" - Fleetwood Mac
"Calling All Angels" - Train
"Samhain Nights" - Loreena McKennitt (when Mulder and Scully are dancing the night of their
first Official Date; somewhere in this haunting and bittersweet melody is Mulder's hand against the small of Scully's pale back and the naked and intimate fear of letting herself open up and move close to this man who can touch her soul or rip her heart out with a single word)
"Name" - Goo Goo Dolls
"Brand New Day" - Forty Foot Echo (This goes with the sequence the morning after Mulder was
crying on the balcony, finally having realized Scully had loved another man. This song was the soundtrack
for Scully walking through the motions of her grey day the next morning, and realizing what had to change, that
she was the one holding back, and that she had to be the one to take the leap.)
"Hurt" - Johnny Cash
"Cathedrals" - Jump Little Children
"Are You Happy Now" - Michelle Branch
"You Are My Number One" - Smashmouth
"Ultimate" - Lindsay Lohan
"Jump in the River" - Sinead O'Connor
"Blue Skies" - Tori Amos
"Underwater" - Vertical Horizon
"Echo" - Veritcal Horizon
"Inside" - Vertical Horizon
"I'm Still Here" - Vertical Horizon
"Blurry" - Puddle of Mudd
"When the Stars Go Blue" - The Corrs
"I Never Loved You Anyway" - The Corrs
"Runaway" - The Corrs (the last minute or so of this song, when the violin part
changes that one note a half step higher and gives it such a sweeping, haunting quality, played in my
mind through much of the last half of Book III, but especially during the first 'I love you' and the returning
of Daniel's cell phone)
"Would You Be Happier" - The Corrs
"Breathe" - Michelle Branch (chapter 27)
"Tuesday Morning" - Michelle Branch (chapter 27)
"Hotel Paper" - Michelle Branch (chapter 28, at the airport, especially)
"One of These Days" - Michelle Branch (also chapter 28)
